Last night we dug into some great scripture truths during our Life Group study with the ladies and we looked at how our belief system truly effects our emotions and behavior. The choices we make, and the actions we take, come from what we believe about who we are and who HE is.
Reading the story in Numbers 13 about God telling Moses, “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan” and the spies that returned in fear of the size and number of the people. Were they really that big or was it their fear that was great? They knew they had just returned with a mighty cluster of grapes yet their fear outweighed their trust in GOD. Think of how big that cluster had to be for two men to carry it on a pole between them. Sorry, but the grapes I pick up today my five year old is able to deliver to the basket. Still, despite all of this they feared man more than trusting in the mighty power of GOD.
Caleb, however, was in trust of GOD as he said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.” Was he thinking about his own capabilities or their own power to overcome? NO, he knew where his faith and trust was and in WHOM he trusted. This was why his actions were to go, belief in the ability to overcome, instead of hiding or running in fear.
We than read about Moses in Exodus 4 and how GOD did not ask Moses but had told him, “I will send you” and “I will certainly be with you” but what was Moses response to this? Disbelief in that he states to God, “Who am I that I should go?” and “O my Lord, I am not eloquent”, and “I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.” Where was Moses belief system and in whom did Moses think he had to trust? GOD had already told him HE was going to be with him and HE would do it. Do we see how Moses belief system played out in his actions?
In Mark 4:35-41 there is the story of the disciples in the boat with Jesus when, “A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling” and what did the disciples do? PANIC! Why, where was their trust? They had Jesus in their boat with them and so why should they have anything to fear? He was on their boat! Jesus said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”
This made me realize that, if we are born again, Jesus is on our boat with us today. He is living inside of us and Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” We are than able to walk and believe what His word says and act upon it or deny it and choose a life of actions based on doubt and fear.
John 8:32 says, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” His word is TRUTH and so do you see how His Truth sets us free from a life of fear and bondage. Hebrews 12:2 tells us His word transforms our mind, our false beliefs, by the renewing our mind, that we may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
May we all take time to read His truth, transform and renew our minds, and walk victoriously in freedom.
In Christ Jesus my Lord.
